Heirship Records and the Undercut Collective announced Wednesday afternoon that Massachusetts band Speedy Ortiz and Palehound will headline a collaborative event to benefit the Up Center of Champaign County, called “You Are Not Alone” on Sept. 10 at the Institute 4 Creativity in downtown Champaign.
Speedy Ortiz has played Champaign-Urbana twice in the past year, including a May date at the HighDive and a set at last year’s Pygmalion Music Festival.
Champaign bands Withershins and Marathon will perform, while Evansville, Ind. band Spandrels will also play. There will be spoken-word poetry in between sets, including performances by local emcee T.R.U.T.H and Saskia Bakker, founder of the Uncercut Collective.
“The benefit will establish a fund at The Up Center of Champaign County to assist homeless youth,” the event’s release read. “With the recognition of same-sex marriage nationwide and the conversations that followed, 2015 has been a historic year for LGBT Americans. With a set of monumental victories behind us, we must now set our sights on issues that are less tidy, issues that affect the marginalized and the unheard. LGBT youth are vulnerable to violence, suicide, and homelessness at high rates that need to be squashed in any way possible. Every generation has taken a swing at changing the world. This is ours.”
The event will cost $7 and will be all-ages. Doors open at 7 p.m.
